Cannabis Job Market Overview:

Cannabis in Massachusetts is legal for medical and recreational use. Massachusetts became the 18th state to legalize medical cannabis when voters passed a ballot measure in 2012. Sales of adult-use cannabis began in November 2018, two years after personal use and home-growing were legalized.

Adult-use cannabis establishments have passed $3 billion in gross sales, according to a recent announcement by the state's Cannabis Control Commission.

Cannabis Job Requirements & Application Process:

Cannabis workers in Massachusetts are called "agents."

Board members, directors, executives, managers, employees, and volunteers of any licensed marijuana establishment must be registered as an agent, per the Massachusetts Cannabis Control Commission's Guidance on Agent Registration

Marijuana Establishments must apply for agent registrations on behalf of the above listed individuals. Applicants must fill out an agent registration application for each individual for each specific license. For example, if a proposed agent will be associated with multiple establishment-types (cultivation, retail, manufacturing, etc.), an application must be submitted for each individual establishment.


  • 21 years of age or older
  • Never convicted in the Commonwealth of distribution of controlled substances to minors or a like offense in another jurisdiction
  • Must be suitable for registration in accordance with 935 CMR 500.800 and 500.802
  • Non-refundable application fee of $50
Cannabis Job Background Check Requirements:

The following background information must be disclosed on the agent application:

  • Description and dates of any criminal action that occurred in any jurisdiction which resulted in a conviction, guilty plea, plea of nolo contendere, or admission of sufficient facts
  • Description and dates of any civil or administrative action that occurred in any jurisdiction relating to any professional, occupational or fraudulent practices
  • Description and dates of any past or pending action on a license that occurred or is occurring in any jurisdiction
  • Description and dates of any past or pending disciplinary action or unresolved complaint that occurred or is occurring in any jurisdiction

A Criminal Offender Record Information (CORI) report is also required within 30 days prior to the submission of an agent registration application.
