Cannabis Job Market Overview:

Virginia has a burgeoning medical cannabis scene, with about four large operators being licensed by the state, including Columbia Care, Jushi, Green Leaf Medical, and Dharma Pharmaceuticals. Each of those companies is permitted to open five retail stores.

In 2021, Virginia lawmakers legalized an adult-use cannabis program that would go into effect on Jan. 1, 2024. Whether or not retail sales will happen in 2024 is uncertain, as the political makeup of the Virginia General Assembly, House of Delegates and Governor's Office has shifted in a way that gives Republicans more power.

Adults 21 and older are legally permitted to possess one ounce or less of cannabis and consume the plant in private residences. Adults 21 and older may grow up to four plants per household. Sharing without compensation up to one ounce of cannabis is also legal in the state.

Most cannabis companies operating in Virginia require an applicant be 21 years of age or older, and pass a background check before being hired.
